Four useful things. Five properly cosy ideas. No enormous seasonal haul arriving in twelve separate boxes.
Shopping rule: check your cupboards first Energy required: pleasantly low Storage required: one small box
A tiny seasonal kit, supervised by an unqualified ceramic cat.
The whole little kit
Each thing earns its cupboard space
These are the four supplies used across our autumn scent ideas. I have avoided prices because Amazon changes them constantly, and I have avoided calling anything “essential” because cinnamon sticks are not oxygen.
01
The hard-working spice
Whole cloves
Useful for a watched simmer pot, a clove-studded orange, a dry spice bowl and drawer sachets. Whole spices are easier to contain than ground ones and considerably less likely to make a pale jumper look like it has been excavated.
Skip it if: you already own a usable jar, or strong fragrance tends to bother somebody in your home.
For keeping completely dry peel and whole spices together in a drawer or cupboard. They can be emptied and reused when the scent fades, which is much nicer than buying a new fragranced plastic thing every fortnight.
Skip it if: you can sew a little sachet from scrap cotton, or already have a breathable fabric bag.
Ready-dried slices for spice bowls, garlands and sachets when drying your own is unlikely to happen before spring. The linked product is sold for decoration, so it belongs in crafts—not in tea, cakes or anybody’s packed lunch.
Skip it if: you enjoy drying your own orange slices, or have some left from last year that are still clean and fully dry.
Useful in the watched simmer pot, dry spice bowl and drawer sachet. They also look satisfyingly like you have inherited an apothecary, despite having arrived in the post on a Tuesday.
Skip it if: you only want cinnamon for baking—ground culinary cinnamon may be the more useful cupboard resident.
